Can She Bring Balance To The Force?
I would like to share with you all just how much I have become consumed by Star Wars and the aura that surrounds it. And it happened like this:
I went with Joe to see Episode 3: Revenge of The Sith the day it came out and realized that I was very interested in the commradery that abounded the theatre. Everyone was there for the same purpose, to unite and enjoy the same film. Darth Vader showed up and Obi-Wan and Anakin were there too! People dressed up just to show their appreciation of the last installment of a legacy.
Not having seen very much of the first two or the last three, I knew that a movie of this magnitude would be made to appeal to the fanatics and the first time viewers. Boy did it ever! I loved it! I came home, ranting and raving about it. So Char hadn't seen it yet and I was all for seeing it again. Proceed to the Arundel Mills Mall!
The second time was just as good as the first. Immediately following, I decided that I must invest in the first two. So I bought The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. *enlightenment occurs* All of a sudden, so many things make sense. Not only did Episode 3 wrap up the first Trilogy, but the Weird Al song, "The Saga Begins," (to the tune of American Pie by Don McLean), and the memories that I had of the second Trilogy came rushing back and I was hooked! So Char and I went and saw it AGAIN...
I started hitting up the eBay, and between buying Seasons 2-4 of CSI: Las Vegas on DVD, and was bidding on items like the bracelets you see below. The blue one reads "Anakin Skywalker" while the green one is the glow-in-the-dark bracelet that says "YODA" on it. My red bracelet could mean just about anything as it only reads "I Will". I now take it as "I will be aware of the evil that surrounds us."
I also bought a shirt that has Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker (not yet Darth Vader and if you can't tell why, *rolls eyes*) AND a shirt that reads "THE FORCE IS STRONG IN THIS ONE" as seen in these pictures. Additionally, I have an old Star Wars Logo Tee, recently added to the collection.
Since my original publishing of this story, I have added some more wonderful items to my ever-growing Star Wars collection. The wall hanging actually is 60 inches tall and 48 inches wide. And yes, that is my daily purse and that is a Darth Vader Mr. Potato Head, AKA Darth Tater.
About a week later, I decided that I had to have Episodes 4, 5, and 6 on Widescreen DVD. So I bought it. Yeah, I shelled out the $43 to own my own copy. Much to my amazement, the digitally remastered DVDs are quite enjoyable. I'm enjoying A New Hope, and The Empire Strikes Back. Naturally, once those are over, I pop in Return of The Jedi. Anyone who saw it in the 80s or 90s, before the remastering and the release of Episode 1, will notice what I did.
At the end of Return of the Jedi, there is a scene where Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Anakin (the good one) come back as ghosts to give Luke the high five/thumbs up/pat on the back for ruining the Empire and fulfilling the prophacy. In the original release, it was some old guy who's name still appears in the new version's credits. On my new DVDs, its Hayden Christensen as Anakin's ghost! Now, I understand that it wouldn't flow or even look right if you watched one through six in order but I was very disappointed in George Lucas. SEE WHAT I MEAN! If you get upset at a seemingly minor detail regarding 6 movies out of millions, there's something going on. When you can hold a philosophical discussion on the Force and how wonderful Yoda and Luke are, then you might want to consider yourself, as I have, a whole other type of nerd.
FACTOIDS:
- In case you didn't know, George Lucas didn't like how his movies were sounding on regular audio so he created THX and LucasFilm to make his own movies look and sound BETTER!
- THX 1138 was the name of George Lucas' first full length film, brought to life from a film school project that was supposed to only be a five minute film but turned out to be 20 minutes.
- Industrial Light and Magic is also his company, doing all the special effects and photography for Star Wars, and such movies as Raiders of The Lost Ark, The Neverending Story, Back To the Future (I, II, & III), Spaceballs (Star Wars Spoof), Jurassic Park, Contact, Casper, Titanic, Harry Potter (All 3 so far), Pirates of the Carribean, The Bourne Series, War of the Worlds, and Herbie: Fully Loaded, just to name a few.
- In the history of the moving picture, all of the Star Wars installments appear on the Top 25 List (according to sales), as follows:
2. Star Wars, Episode 4: A New Hope (Theatre Gross $460,998,007/Release Date: 05/25/1977)
5. Star Wars, Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (Theatre Gross $431,088,301/Release Date: 05/19/1999)
7. Star Wars, Episode 3: Revenge of The Sith (Theatre Gross $379,498,649/Release Date: 05/19/2005)
18. Star Wars, Episode 2: Attack of the Clones (Theatre Gross $310,676,740/Release Date: 05/16/2002)
19. Star Wars, Episode 6: Return of the Jedi (Theatre Gross $309,306,177/Release Date: 05/25/1983)
23. Star Wars, Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back (Theatre Gross $290,475,067/Release Date: 05/21/1980)
- Lucas' movies also, along with Steven Speilberg's films, created the term "blockbuster" in the film industry because the lines to get into the theatres were so long, they'd wrap around the block. Essentially, the block was busting with people.
- Keria Knightley (Pirates of the Carribean), plays one of Queen Amidala's (Natalie Portman) clones, keeping the enemy from killing the real queen. I mention this because I swore up and down when I saw Pirates that it was Natalie Portman playing Elizabeth Swann.
Had enough? :-D
